Flatweave & Kilims

Known in Morocco as Hanbels, Kilims are relatively resistant fabrics, less thick and less heavy than the high pile wool carpets. There are many kinds of these flatweaves; most of them were traditionally produced in the rural regions of Morocco as tent decorations, floor coverings, blankets, or transport bags.
A complex mixture of weft substitution and wrapping techniques is used by most tribes of the Middle Atlas To create kilim patterns. Some tribes in the south use weft twining and dovetailing tapestry weaving.
